7 Lawn Aeration Tips
Lawn aeration is basic to having an evergreen, healthy lawn. This is a process in which holes
are made in your lawn either by pushing a rod into it or by coring. By aerating the lawn, you
provide it with the essential benefits that it badly needed:
• Oxygen. Aerating it will allow the air to have an easy contact with the roots. Also, you
saturate the soil with the much needed oxygen.
• You loosen tight and compacted soil allowing the root to have a deeper and firmer grip
on the ground. With loosened soil the roots can expand also.
• Since the soil is loosened, water can then have an easy access to the root system for it is
easily absorbed.
• Fertilizers and other necessary nutrients also can be easily accessed by the root system
contributing to a greener lawn.
• Thatching is minimized, if not prevented. A thatch is an accumulation of grass stems,
clippings, roots and other decomposing matters that have settled on the surface of the
ground making it hard for water and other nutrients to be absorbed easily by the soil
making your lawn malnourished. This is easily managed with soil aeration. But how do you aerate your lawn properly? Here are some tips to help you.
1. Mark where you placed the water sprinklers. Their lines might be punctured during the
process. To avoid future inconvenience, better bury the water lines deep enough not to
be reached by your lawn aerator.
2. It is advisable that you water the lawn the night before. Watering should be heavy
enough to soften the soil. Do not aerate just after you water the lawn since the water has
not yet soaked up totally making your lawn muddy.
3. Before operating your aerator, be sure you have read the manual carefully. Making
sure that you know how to operate the machine makes your work easy and you avoid
unnecessary problems later. Check if the machine is in shape to operate.
4. Give more attention to high traffic areas since the soil in these areas are compacted. You
may want to go over these areas twice for efficient results.
5. Pay extra caution when operating in hilly areas. Since aerators, especially power
aerators, are quite bulky to operate, there might be a tendency it will tip on hilly areas.
You must avoid these scenarios by holding it firmly with your both hands.
6. Some power aerators emit too much noise which is not safe to the ears after long
exposure to it. Ear plugs or mufflers are advisable. These will greatly lessen the danger
of ear damages.

steps and you will be like a pro. You neighbors and friends might want to hire you to do their
