What Is a Drum Aerator?
A drum aerator is basically a steel roller with metal blades or spikes. Metal blades, designed to aerate and cut through the thatch. Most of the time, a drum aerator works all right, but it doesn’t work as well as a core aerator. The advantage of using a drum aerator is that it is pretty easy. It is also cheaper to buy than it is to buy a core aerator.
However, the holes made by a drum aerator, are made by driving a spike into the soil. The goal is to make it easier for water to penetrate. When water penetrates, it helps to soften the soil.
If you are going to buy a drum aerator, you want to get one that puts spikes in your lawn that are at least 2 ½ inches deep. In addition, you want one that is quite heavy. The heavier it is, the easier time you will have penetrating into the soil using a drum aerator. Make sure you get a good quality drum aerator that will last.
Overall, I like core aerators better. When you use a core aerator, you actually remove the cores. Most of the time, a spike aerator will only last for a few weeks. The benefits of using a core aerator will last for the season. If you are planning on re-seeding, it might actually work better to use a drum aerator. However, if you just want to develop thicker turf, and deeper roots, more resistant to drought and require less regular watering. One of the major advantages of a drum aerator is it doesn’t leave plug all over your lawn when you use it.
