Learn How To Get Rid of Weeds
One of the battles every homeowner has to face is learning how to get rid of lawn weeds. It seems like every summer, my lawn looks amazing until the first week of April. Once the April rolls around, I start to notice that most of my
neighbors have bright yellow flowers in their lawn. This means they have dandelions, and if I am not careful, I am going also get these dandelions in my lawn. Below are a few suggestions that will help you.
Create a good defensive barrier against them. A vigorously growing lawn is your best defense. By taking the time to mow your lawn on a weekly basis, and fertilize and watered regularly, you will have dense turf. If you do get weed seeds in your lawn, they will get choked out by your healthy grass, and won’t grow.
Another way to prevent lawn weeds is to dig a small trench along the edges of your lawn. This works especially well with front lawns. If weed seeds get blown across the street and go into these trenches. Then, all you have to do is pull them out as soon as they start growing. First generation weeds are easy to take care of. This does a pretty good job at keeping the weeds out of your lawn.
Another thing you can do to prevent weeds is to use a pre-emergence on your grass. This stops new seed from sprouting. The best time to put one on your lawn is in the early spring.
Once the Weeds Start Growing
Once the weeds start to grow in your lawn, the easiest solution is for you to just go out and simply pull them. If your lawn doesn’t have a lot of weeds, you can do this in less time it would take to apply weed killer. Plus you save money and use less herbicide to make your lawn look good.
If you have a large lawn, or a major problem with weeds, you should use a weed killer. Apply the weed killer right away. The first generation of weeds is always the easiest to deal with. Once you get to the second and third generations, weeds can spread out over your entire lawn, they are very difficult to get rid of. So it is best to start right away taking care of the problem.
There are essentially two different types of weed killers you can use. One is for broad leaf weeds and the other for grassy weeds. Broad leaf weeds are much easier to kill than grassy weeds. These herbicides often work with just one application. Horsetail, dandelions and clover are considered among the most common broad leaf weeds.
Grassy weeds and sledges need a selective weed killer, which selectively targets and kills them.
If you get to the point where weeds have taken over your entire garden, you may want to use a non-selective weed killer. This will kill everything it touches and then you can start over. It’s a good idea to wear gloves, and a mask when applying a weed killer.
Contact weed killers need to come into contact with the weeds to kill them. Systematic weed killers can be absorbed by the plant through the roots.
Once you’ve gotten rid of the weeds, go back and seed and aerate your lawn. That way you will have a denser turf that is more resistant to weeds in the future.
